About
The writing and the photography are the same instinct: find the moment nobody staged, before it can be softened into something safer.
I · The press box
I have spent the better part of three decades watching cricket closely enough to write the truth about it — the whole truth, including the parts a safety filter would soften.
I started as a junior reporter and worked my way up through South Africa's national Sunday broadsheets, and have since written for CricBuzz, ESPNcricinfo, The Guardian, the Sunday Times, TimesLIVE, Mail & Guardian, Business Day, and Sowetan. I'm currently CricBuzz's South Africa correspondent. Along the way I've filed more than 4,900 published pieces — match reports, profiles, investigations, and opinion that doesn't flinch from saying a batter “played with the yips” if that's what actually happened out there.

II · Bulletproof Truth
That directness is the point. I've never been interested in cricket writing that exists to flatter the sport or protect its administrators. The Journalism section of this site includes my independent blog, Bulletproof Truth, in full — more than four thousand posts of commentary, criticism, and reporting that the wire services wouldn't run, tagged and cross-referenced across more than a decade of South African and international cricket.

III · The second lens
But cricket is only one of the things I look at closely. Ask me what else matters and I'll tell you:
The photography isn't a hobby I mention in passing — it's a second body of work entirely, a documentary eye that's followed me from Cape Town to Paris, Sarajevo, Goa, and back again, always looking for the same thing I look for at the crease: a moment nobody staged, captured before it can be softened into something safer.

IV · Sea Point
I'm based in Sea Point, Cape Town — and, more often than not, there's a hat on my head and a laptop open somewhere with a decent view of the game.
