South Africans set for more sleep, less cricket

TELFORD VICE, Cape Town

South Africans who give up on a good night’s sleep whenever SA tour Australia might be able to reclaim lost rest during their team’s test series there in November.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the third test is expected to be a day/night match in Adelaide. It would be SA’s first under lights in the format.

“That looks likely,” a Cricket SA source said on Tuesday. Confirmation is anticipated by the end of this month.

Under day/night playing conditions the match should start at 5.30am (SA time). During the previous test SA played in Adelaide, in November 2012, committed South Africans tumbled out of bed in time to catch a 2am start.

Adelaide hosted the inaugural day/night test between Australia and New Zealand last November. An enthralling match was played with the pink ball, ending inside three “days” in a three-wicket win for the home side.

SA will reportedly start their series in Perth before playing a test in Hobart for the first time.

On the downside, they will only play three tests on tour - one fewer than the respective boards agreed to bilaterally.

Apparently, Cricket Australia are reluctant to schedule more than six tests in a summer in which they will also host Pakistan for three matches.

Pakistan also seem certain to end their rubber under lights, but in Brisbane.
